The Different Types of Laser Levels

1) Plumb and Dot Lasers. These are lasers that generate one or many dots of light when pointed at a surface. They provide reference points so that you can compare and ensure the area is level.

2) Laser Line Levels. These types of lasers emit a line which is level with the surface. Normally, laser line levels produce a laser line in one direction only. They are more suited to indoor use and generally small and hand held. If required they can also be placed on a table or shelf for instance to leave the operator with free hands for work.

3) Rotary Lasers send out a single, rotating laser line. This will show a laser beam that completely circles the area instead of being directed only at a single surface. These ,types of instruments are large and heavy. They need to be placed on a tripod which is usually part of the package. When used they are set up in the centre of the area to be surveyed.

Automatic or Self Leveling Lasers

The above describes the way that the lasers emit light but they are also available as self leveling laser types. Many surveyors choose to use an automatic or self leveling type of laser level survey equipment in order to save time and money. With a self leveling laser, if it is jarred accidentally, it will reset automatically to the proper level saving the surveyor the time required to do the job himself. So the surveyor need not be constantly standing by the instrument to hold it until the surveying job is complete.
