How to Care for Your Lawn in the Colder Weather

During the cold weather you should make sure that there is no young growth on your lawn as this will cause it to be likely to succumb to pests and diseases. To do this gradually, lower the cutting height of your lawnmower until you are practically grazing the grass. Do this in stages over several weeks as you do not want to suddenly remove all the tissue or cause extra damage to the turf. You don’t want to let the grass grow longer than two inches for the winter.

Administer fertiliser to the grass at the end of fall. Even though it won’t be utilised by the lawn over the cold weather it will be reserved in the roots and will be immediately usable by the grass in the Spring when new growth starts again. Re-seed brown or bare areas during the Fall. The grass seeds will sprout in the colder weather.

Clear up any debris from the grass before the severest weather. This includes leaves, grass clippings, equipment, pots etc. If not removed when it begins to snow these could cover the grass under the blanket of snow and may cause damage which may make the grass vulnerable to pets and diseases. During the colder weather, although the grass grows not as fast weeds will thrive so you need to weekly take out weeds to stop them from causing damage to the lawn.

As well you should still water the lawn during the winter, although less often than you would during the warmer weather. For most types of grass watering each week should be plenty. Other types, for example rye grass and tall fescue grow well in the colder weather and need more water during this season.

Should you have a watering system drain out all the water to avoid damage in icy weather. You don’t want to start it up the following Spring to find the pipes are damaged and full of holes.

With some care your grass will get through the winter in the best shape and emerge green and healthy when it starts to grow again in the Spring.  Winter lawn care is not difficult if you follow our guidelines. You’ll find more information on lawn mowers and lawn care at lawn mower reviews.
