Contact lenses can be a problem if you have dry eyes. In eyes that are healthy, a very thin layer of tears will always form under your lenses. If this layer dries out, the contacts will start to feel very dry. This can be painful, and you might find yourself rubbing your eyes which will make it worse.

Even though lenses may be a cause of dry eyes, there may be other causes, including your own level of tear production.  Some people produce more tears than other and as we age, the tears that you are able to produce will begin to decrease.

Another cause could be your environment.  If you work in a factory or area that is over heated, or are exposed to dust or smoke, your eyes may well dry out. Spending  along time in these kinds of situations will make the problem worse.  After a few hours, you may find yourself having to take out your contacts due to the dryness becoming so irritating.

There are however, some types of contact lenses that can can make dryness worse. Most contact lenses are manufactured from polymers and water, many being more than 50% water. The lens may feel moist and comfortable in your eye, the water will start to evaporate from the contact lens as you wear it. When this happens, the contact will draw moisture from the tears in your eyes, resulting in less tears and dry eyes.

With dryness being a common problem for most people who wear contact lenses, manufacturers are always working to create contacts that will remain comfortable throughout the day. The most common cause of irritation is dry eyes, and the main reason why some people give up wearing lenses and go back to glasses to see better.

Acuvue Oasys are one of the more popular makes of contact lenses. Even though they are relatively new, they have rapidly become popular as they are designed specifically for anyone who spends a lot of time in a dry environment. They contain a special agent for re-wetting purposes, which enables the contact lens to remain moist, even when you are making less tears.  These are daily lenses which should be left in solution overnight and replaced every two weeks or so.

Dry eyes are a common problem but the right type of lense can make a big difference.  You can also use artificial tears or re-wetting solution when you eyes feel dry. These are readily available at the same place you bought your lenses.
