What does small business website design actually involve?

It is three jobs, not one. Someone has to decide what the site needs to say and to whom, someone has to design how it looks and moves, and someone has to build it so it loads fast and holds up. We do all three in-house, so nothing is lost in the handoff between a designer who does not code and a developer who never heard the client.

A build starts with a conversation about your business and your customers, not about colors. We look at how people find you now, what they ask before they buy, and where enquiries currently fall through. The design follows from that.

Do I own my website?

Yes, completely. The domain, the files, the hosting account and the content are all in your name. You can move the site elsewhere whenever you want, and we will help you do it.

This is worth asking every agency you talk to. Some builders keep you on a proprietary platform the site cannot leave, which means the moment you stop paying, the site stops existing. We build on WordPress precisely so that is never the position you are in.

What makes a website convert rather than just look good?

Clarity about one action. A page that asks a visitor to do six things gets none of them done. Every page we build has a single primary action, stated plainly and repeated where a reader is most likely to take it.

After that it is friction. Slow pages lose people before the first paragraph. Forms with nine fields get abandoned at the fourth. Phone numbers that are not tappable on a phone do not get called. Most conversion work is not clever, it is removing the small reasons people give up.

How does a new website get found on Google?

Three things have to be true. The site has to be crawlable and fast, which is a technical job we handle at build time. It has to say the things your customers actually search for, which comes out of keyword research rather than guesswork. And other credible sites and directories have to point at it, which is where your Google Business Profile and local listings matter more than most owners expect.

A new site does not rank overnight. Expect movement within a few weeks on your own business name, and a few months on competitive service terms. Anyone promising faster than that is either guessing or gaming something that will not hold.

What happens after the site launches?

Every site we host is maintained: WordPress core and plugin updates, security patching, daily backups, uptime monitoring, and an SSL certificate that renews itself. When something breaks you reach a person, not a ticket queue.

Beyond maintenance, the useful question is what the site should do next. The sites that keep earning are the ones that get edited: a new service page, a case study, an FAQ answering the question three customers asked last month. We can do that for you, or hand you the keys.

When is a template enough, and when is it not?

A template is fine when your needs are ordinary and your budget is tight. If you sell one service to one kind of customer in one place, a well-chosen template will not hold you back, and we will say so.

It stops being enough the moment the site has a job beyond describing you: taking bookings, quoting, syncing with a CRM, routing enquiries to different people, selling. That is where templates start fighting you, and where a custom build pays for itself.

What do you need from me to get started?

Less than you think. Most owners assume they need finished copy and professional photography before anything can begin. You do not. Bring what you have, an old site, a brochure, a rough idea of what you want to say, and we will draft the rest for you to correct. Correcting a draft is far easier than facing a blank page.

The one thing we do need is decisions. Projects stall on unanswered questions far more often than on missing content.

Where we work

We build for businesses across the United States. If you are in northeast Kansas, our Lawrence web design page covers how we work in that market.

Small business website design: common questions

Do I need to provide all the content for my website?

No. We write professional copy for every page as part of our website packages. You provide basic information about your business, services, and customers. We turn that into clear, compelling content. You review and approve before anything goes live.

How long does it take to build a website?

Starter websites typically launch in 2-3 weeks. Growth websites with advanced features take 4-6 weeks. Timeline depends on how quickly you provide content, feedback, and approvals. We set clear milestones at the start of every project so you know exactly when to expect delivery.

How much does a small business website cost?

What a website costs depends on what it has to do. A clean, professional site of a few pages and a platform with e-commerce, a blog, or members-only areas are different builds, and custom projects are scoped individually.

Every site we deliver includes mobile-responsive design, professional copywriting, and connection to our business platform.

Every project starts with a free strategy call so we can scope what you actually need and quote it accurately, rather than quoting a package that may not fit.

What is the difference between a regular website and an AI-powered website?

A regular website displays information. An AI-powered website works for you. Our sites can connect directly to our CRM, automation platform, and AI tools. Forms capture leads and trigger follow-up sequences. Chat widgets connect to AI agents. Everything integrates so your website becomes the foundation of an intelligent business system, not just an online brochure.

Will my website work on mobile devices?

Yes. Every website we build is fully responsive, meaning it automatically adjusts to look great on phones, tablets, and desktops. With over 60% of web traffic coming from mobile devices, this is a requirement for every project we deliver.
